Each of them has its own story.

Dig deeper, we will find that some of the flowers live another way.

Finding the story behind the beauty of flowers.

Portray their inconspicuous life.

 


 

The Secret Life of Flower photography exhibition displays the result of a workshop initiated by Prof Jan Jindra and Eva Plutova from Tomas Bata University in Zlin, Czech.

 

The participants are 21 students of Creative Advertising, Visual Communication Design-School of Design, Bina Nusantara University.

The Goal:

The participants must create 8-10 photographs that response the question relate to the cycle of life of flowers.

Each student choose one type of flower, dig deeper about its life: the story of growing, the harvest, the delivery, the marketing and placement, the drying or recycling process. The participants doesn’t only focus on reportage or documentary photograph, but different types of photography (still life, concept, portrait photography, etc).

The students must explore various ideas on how to capture the topic. The idea before taking picture is the key feature of a strong photographic story.

The photograph series will consist of 5 parts:

Part 1. The growing and the harvest of the flowers.

Part 2. Focus on the selling and buying activities of flowers at the Rawa Belong Flower Market, West Jakarta. The selling and buying ectivities start from delivering, preparing, packing the flowers for the costomer.

Part 3. The flowers as a part of our rituals that could be found everywhere, such as in the shop, hotel, wedding ritual, home, funeral ritual. We focus on the language of flowers.

Part 4. Discover the second life of the flowers. The recycling process of the blossom.

Part 5.The end of the life of the flowers, such as abandoned flowers, dry flowers, trash, etc.

 

The Method:

The topic is brightly open to all photographic ideas, technology and all the way of makin pictures.

 

The mandatory:

Collecting softcopy A3 size (29.7 x 42 cm) with 300 dpi resolution.

 

The Program

Jan Jindra was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on 7 October 1962. From 1978 to 1982, Jan Jindra trained in commercial photography, taught by Stanislav Boloňský, at the secondary school of graphic arts (Střední průmyslová škola grafická) in Hellichova ulice, Prague. From 1982 to 1987, he attended the Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU), train­ing in art photography under Ján Šmok and Pavel Štecha. At that time, he focused mainly on documentary photography. In 1987, Jindra won a prize in the Young European Photographers competition in Frankfurt am Main. In 1990, he participated in the third Eddie Adams Workshop, in New York. In the same year he carried out several assignments for Sygma Photo News, Paris. In 1992 he was a stringer photographer for Prostor, a Prague daily, and between 1993 and 2002 he made more than a hundred covers for the magazine Softwarové noviny. From 1992 onward, he gradually established himself in the world of advertising photography. From 1998 to 2013, he was a full member of the Bund Freischaffender Foto-Designer e.V. (Association of Freelance Photographers) in Germany. In 2001, he won First Prize in the Science and Technology Category of the Czech Press Photo competition, and in 2003 First Prize in the Canon competition in Poland. Since 2002, he has taught at the Faculty of Multimedia Communication, Tomáš Baťa University, Zlín, lecturing in the Department of Advertising Photography and Graphic Arts. In 2012, he was made a Docent at the Academy of Performing Arts, Prague.
